Examine gamaliel’s intervention during the arrest of the twelve apostles
When the council was debating what to do with the apostles, Gamaliel stood up and spoke. He said, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him.
He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. After him, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him.
He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. So in the present case, I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” (Acts 5:33-39)
Gamaliel’s intervention shows that he was a wise and thoughtful leader who wanted to avoid making a rash decision. He recognized that the apostles were preaching a message that was causing conflict and controversy, and he suggested that the council should wait and see what would happen before taking action.
He pointed out that other leaders who had tried to rise up against the established authorities had failed, and he suggested that if the apostles’ message was from God, then the council would not be able to stop it.
Gamaliel’s intervention ultimately led to the council releasing the apostles and allowing them to continue preaching.
Discuss three ways of promoting church growth
(I) Focus on evangelism and outreach: One way to promote church growth is to focus on evangelism and outreach. This can involve going out into the community and sharing the message of the gospel with people who may not be familiar with it. It can also involve inviting friends, family, and neighbors to church events and services, and providing them with information about the church and its beliefs and values.
(II) Offer engaging and relevant worship services: Another way to promote church growth is to offer worship services that are engaging and relevant to people’s lives. This can involve choosing music and other elements of the service that are contemporary and appealing, and using technology and multimedia to enhance the experience. It can also involve providing teaching and preaching that is relevant to people’s daily lives and addresses their needs and concerns.
(III) Provide opportunities for fellowship and community: A third way to promote church growth is to provide opportunities for fellowship and community. This can involve hosting social events and activities, such as potlucks, picnics, and game nights, that allow people to get to know each other and build relationships. It can also involve providing support and care for people who are going through difficult times, such as illness, loss, or other challenges, and helping them feel connected and supported within the church community.
