Introduction

The Physics syllabus, derived from the Senior Secondary School teaching syllabus, outlines the scope of the Physics examination course.

It is organized based on a conceptual approach that covers broad concepts such as matter, energy, waves, fields, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, and electronics.

Each concept forms a foundational part on which sub-concepts are further based.

Objectives:

The syllabus aims to equip candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles and applications of Physics.
  • Develop scientific skills and attitudes necessary for further scientific activities.
  • Recognize the usefulness and limitations of scientific methods and appreciate their applicability in other disciplines and daily life.
  • Develop abilities, attitudes, and skills that encourage safe and efficient practice.
  • Foster scientific attitudes, including accuracy, precision, objectivity, integrity, initiative, and inventiveness.

Assessment Objectives:

The Physics syllabus tests candidates’ proficiency in the following areas:

1. Knowledge acquisition and understanding, including scientific phenomena, facts, laws, definitions, concepts, and theories.

  • Mastery of scientific vocabulary, terminology, and conventions, including symbols, quantities, and units.
  • Proficiency in the use of scientific apparatus, including operational techniques and safety aspects.
  • Competency in determining scientific quantities.
  • Awareness of scientific and technological applications and their social, economic, and environmental implications.

2. Under the Information Handling and Problem-solving category

  • Candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in using different forms of information to carry out various tasks.

This includes organizing and presenting data from multiple sources, analyzing and evaluating data, identifying patterns and trends, making predictions, and presenting reasonable explanations for natural phenomena.

3. Similarly, under the Experimental and Problem-Solving Techniques category

  • Candidates should be able to follow instructions and carry out experimental procedures using apparatus.
  • They should be capable of making and recording observations, measurements, and estimates with precision, accuracy, and proper units.
  • They should also be able to interpret, evaluate, and report experimental data.
  • Identify problems, plan and carry out investigations.
  • Evaluate methods, suggest improvements.
  • Explain necessary precautions taken in experiments to obtain accurate results.

The examination scheme comprises three papers:

Papers 1, 2, and 3.

Candidates must take all three papers.

Paper 1 is a 1¼ hour, 50-mark multiple-choice question paper.

Paper 2 is a 1½ hour paper with two sections, A and B, carrying 60 marks.

Section A consists of seven short-structured questions, of which candidates must answer any five for a total of 15 marks.

Section B comprises five essay questions, of which candidates must answer any three for 45 marks.

Paper 3 is a practical test that is mandatory for school candidates or an alternative to practical work paper for private candidates.

Each version of the paper will have three questions, of which candidates must answer any two within 2¾ hours for 50 marks.

It is important for candidates to engage in practical activities when studying this syllabus.

They will be required to answer questions on the topics listed under ‘TOPIC.’

The ‘NOTES’ section is intended to provide an idea of the questions’ scope, but it should not be regarded as an exhaustive list of limitations and illustrations.

Questions will be set in S.I. units, but multiples or sub-multiples of these units may be used.
