The creation of Netnaija was not a coincidence, but resulted from a partnership between Abiodun and Bridge upon their desire to unite the Nigerian online community and create a website that gave Nigerians access to movies they could not watch anywhere else.
For Abiodun, who had been living in the United States for many years, the idea of creating Netnaija was born when he received a call from Bridge about his passion for music discovery. The two had known each other for 18 years before meeting at an international conference in Istanbul in 2007, where Bridge came up with an idea that would become Netnaija’s name.
While researching countries where movies could be downloaded, Abiodun discovered that Nigeria lagged behind other African countries in terms of films available online. “We realised that we’ve got this huge movie library here in Nigeria and there’s so much more out there,” said Abiodun.
With this in mind, the two set out to build a website that would allow Nigerians to download films without having to buy them on DVD or Blu-ray disc (a format prevalent among many African countries).
“Netnaija is about giving Nigerians access to films we can’t see anywhere else,” said Bridge. “It’s about bringing Nigerians together through technology.”
