Ilhan Abdullahi Omar (born October 4, 1982) is an American politician who has served in the United States House of Representatives since 2019.
She is a Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party member. Omar served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019, representing a portion of Minneapolis before being elected to Congress.
Her congressional district encompasses the whole city of Minneapolis as well as several of the city’s first-ring suburbs.
Omar is the whip of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and she has fought for a $15 minimum wage, universal healthcare, student loan debt forgiveness, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals protection, and the abolition of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Omar, a vocal critic of Israel, backs the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and has criticized the country’s settlement policy and military campaigns in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as what she calls pro-Israel lobbying activity.
Omar is the first Somali American and first African-born naturalized citizen in the US Congress, as well as the first woman of color to represent Minnesota.

When Ilhan was two years old, her mother, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a Benadiri (a Yemeni community), died.
Her father and grandparents, both moderate Sunni Muslims opposed to the strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam, raised her.
Omar’s grandpa, Abukar, was the director of Somalia’s National Marine Transport, and some of her uncles and aunts were also civil employees and educators.

Omar started her professional career as a community nutrition educator at the University of Minnesota, where she worked in the Greater Minneapolis–Saint Paul area from 2006 until 2009.
She was the campaign manager for Kari Dziedzic’s reelection to the Minnesota State Senate in 2012. She worked as a child nutrition outreach coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Education from 2012 to 2013.
According to MinnPost, Minneapolis city council member Abdi Warsame informed Johnson the day before the caucus that Omar should not attend.
