SPECIMEN B – Common Housefly:

The common housefly, scientifically known as Musca domestica, is an insect commonly found in and around human habitats.

It is known for its ability to spread diseases and is often used as a specimen for studying insect anatomy, life cycles, and ecological roles.

SPECIMEN B - Common Housefly

SPECIMEN C – Household Spider:

The term “household spider” is quite broad, as there are numerous species of spiders that can be found in and around homes.

Spiders are arachnids that play important roles in controlling insect populations. Studying spiders can involve examining their anatomy, behavior, webs, and ecological significance.

SPECIMEN C - Household Spider

SPECIMEN D – White Termite:

Termites are eusocial insects known for their ability to break down cellulose-rich materials like wood.

The term “white termite” may refer to a particular species or a general term for a termite with a white appearance.

Termites are important to study in terms of their social behavior, caste system, symbiotic relationships with microorganisms, and their impact on ecosystems and human structures.

SPECIMEN D - White Termite

SPECIMEN E – Toad or Frog:

Toads and frogs belong to the amphibian group of animals. They are known for their unique life cycles, which involve both aquatic and terrestrial stages.

These specimens are commonly used to study topics such as amphibian anatomy, adaptations, reproduction, and their ecological importance in aquatic ecosystems.

SPECIMEN E - Toad or Frog

SPECIMEN F – Orange fruit:

Oranges are citrus fruits that are rich in vitamin C and have a tangy flavor. From a biological perspective, studying an orange fruit can involve understanding its structure, anatomy, reproductive mechanisms, and nutritional value.

It may also relate to topics such as plant growth, development, and the role of fruits in seed dispersal.

SPECIMEN F - Orange fruit

SPECIMEN G – Pea pod:

Pea pods are the seed pods of pea plants. They are commonly used in biology education to study concepts such as plant reproduction, seed development, and Mendelian genetics.

Pea plants, particularly the garden pea (Pisum sativum), have been extensively used in genetic studies due to their easily observable traits and predictable inheritance patterns.

SPECIMEN H – Okra fruit:

Okra, also known as lady’s finger or gumbo, is a flowering plant that produces elongated green pods. It is often used as a culinary vegetable.

From a biological perspective, studying the okra fruit may involve examining its anatomy, seed development, plant reproduction, and its nutritional composition.

SPECIMEN I – Banana fruit:

Bananas are one of the most widely consumed fruits worldwide. They are produced by herbaceous plants belonging to the genus Musa.

Studying a banana fruit can involve exploring its anatomy, growth patterns, reproduction, nutritional content, and the agricultural importance of bananas as a staple crop.

SPECIMEN J – Pineapple:

Pineapple is a tropical fruit known for its sweet and tangy taste. Pineapples are produced by the bromeliad plant Ananas comosus.

Studying a pineapple can involve understanding its structure, reproduction, growth patterns, the role of fruits in seed dispersal, and the agricultural practices associated with pineapple cultivation.

SPECIMEN K – Maize grain:

Maize, also known as corn, is a cereal crop widely cultivated for its edible grain.

Studying a maize grain can involve examining its structure, seed development, germination, and the nutritional composition of maize kernels.

Maize is also an important model organism for genetic studies.

Hand lens for each candidate:

A hand lens, also known as a magnifying glass, is a tool used to magnify objects for closer observation. It is commonly used in biology to examine small specimens, details of plant structures, or the identification of small organisms.

Dissecting set for each candidate:

A dissecting set typically includes tools such as forceps, scalpels, scissors, and pins. It is used for the dissection of specimens to study their internal structures, organs, and anatomical relationships.

IJMB Chemistry Practical Specimen 2023 (Alternative A)

(1a) Prepare solution A by quantitatively transferring 4.8 g of potassium tetraoxomanganate (VIl) KMnO₄, to 2 dm³ volumetric flask containing about 1 dm³ distilled water, shake the result solution and make it up to mark with distilled water.

Store the solution in amberedcoloured (dark brown) bottle. Give each student about 90 cm³ of the solution.

(b) Prepare solution B by transferring an accurately weighed quantity of 6.3 g of hydrated oxalic acid (ethanedioc acid dihydrate), H₂C₂O₄.2H₂O to 2 dm³ volumetric flask containing about 1 dm³ distilled water.

Shake the solution to dissolve the compound and make it up to mark with distilled water. Give each student about 100 cm³ of the solution.

(c) Prepare solution C by transferring 220 cm³ of concentrated tetraoxosulphate (VI) acid, H₂SO (98 % w/w, specific gravity 1.80) in to 2 dm³ volumetric flask containing about 1 dm³ distilled water.

Allow the solution to cool and gradually make it up to mark with distilled water.

Give each student about 70 cm³ of the solution.

(d) A measuring cylinder in addition to other materials for volumetric analysis.

2. Each student should be provided with the following samples (about 1g each) appropriately labelled as indicated.

SAMPLE A1 = BARIUM CHLORIDE

SAMPLE A2 = BENZALDEHYDE

SAMPLE A3 = PHENOL

Ensure that all necessary test reagents for inorganic and organic qualitative analyses are provided in the laboratory benches.

THESE SHOULD BE THE CONTENT OF EACH SAMPLE AND THIS INFORMATION SHOULD NOT BE DISCLOSED TO CANDIDATES.
