Career and Education

Itse Sagay received his early education at CMS School in Warri before attending Government College, Ughelli, Delta State.

He worked as a Customs clerk and a programme operator (studio manager) at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, Ikoyi, before pursuing his tertiary education.

Sagay earned his Bachelor of Law degree (LL.B) from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1965, followed by professional training at the Nigerian Law School, where he was called to the Bar in July 1966.

He obtained the Certificate of the Council of Legal Education (B.L.) in 1966 and became an enrolled Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on July 22, 1966.

Sagay’s passion for academia led to his retention as a teaching assistant by the University of Ife, which sponsored him for post-graduate studies at King’s College, Cambridge University, UK.

He earned his Master’s degree in 1968 and his Doctorate degree in 1970, both from the same university.

Additionally, Sagay obtained a Certificate from The Hague Academy of International Law in 1976, adding to his already impressive educational accomplishments.

Academic Career

Itse Sagay’s academic career is impressive, having climbed the ranks to become a Professor of Law at the University of Ife in 1979.

During his tenure there, he served in various capacities, including Acting Head of the Department of International Law and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, before becoming Dean from 1981 to 1982.

He later joined the University of Benin as a visiting Professor in 1981 and eventually became the institution’s first and only Professor for the first few years.

In addition to his academic accomplishments, Sagay is a prolific author and has written eleven books, including the seminal publication “The Nigerian Law of Contract,” which remains a go-to resource material for law students.

Sagay’s contributions to national and international institutions include serving in various ad-hoc capacities for organizations such as the African Union (AU), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Nigerian Law Reform Commission, and Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

He is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

As a member of various international legal associations such as the International Law Association and the American Society of International Law, he remains a respected figure in the legal industry.

Currently, Sagay is the Managing Partner of Itse Sagay & Co., a position he has held since 1988. His reputation for integrity, high principles, and a strong sense of propriety led to his appointment as the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption by President Muhammadu Buhari in August 2015.
